COMPETITIVE PROGRAM

TEAM SPIRIT

JOIN OUR COMPETITIVE TEAM

The Arts Connection School of Dance’s competitive program provides opportunities to train at a higher level for dancers who wish to compete. This program encourages dancers to use their talents to the best of their abilities while fostering self-confidence, teamwork, graciousness and courtesy. Dancers in the competitive program will learn the importance of working hard in a positive environment and develop the poise, courage and confidence to compete on stage.

Placement into the competitive program is either by invitation or after a successful audition. If you are interested in joining our competitive team, please call (604-241-0141) or email (info@theartsconnection.ca) ) our office to arrange an audition with the appropriate instructor.

All students registering for a competitive class must sign and agree to the competition contract. Contracts will be discussed and signed in classes the first week each Fall. Read through the Competition Contract here to see if you’re ready to commit to the competitive program! If you have any questions, please click here or contact Miss Kara.

A dance competition is a performance opportunity for students where they get critiqued from renowned professional dancers and compete against other dancers their age. The students learn one routine at the beginning of the year and dance this routine at various competitions. Competitive groups will also get to perform this routine at the year-end show (note: competitive solos, duos, and trios will NOT participate in the June recital).

Competition classes are geared towards students who really want to thrive and become better dancers. The class has a professional attitude and dancers are there to learn and grow throughout the year. By participating in competitions, students have goals that they get to work towards. They have to memorize a dance and then work on it all year to make it look immaculate. This helps develop students’ brains and helps with academics as well. The dancers learn the importance of committing to something and working hard while learning how to set and reach goals. Because they are dancing so closely with others, they learn how to work in a team and cooperate, developing strong relationships with their fellow dancers. They also learn how to perform on stage and express themselves, discovering who they are as individuals. And they learn how to win and how to lose. They get to see other dancers to inspire them to continue to reach and better themselves. There is a lot of responsibility that the students must take on in order to know their dance and be where they are supposed to be. It is a wonderful journey being part of a competitive dance group; students will learn endless life lessons on top of improving their skills as dancers. Come join the team!

In order to present our best as a School of Dance at the competitions, we want the dancers in each level of competition classes to be of similar skill level. Students will be invited into a specific competitive class by the teacher on their class recommendation forms. If you are a new student or current student who does not receive a recommendation to participate in the competition classes, but are interested in being a part of them, please contact the office and we can arrange to have a discussion or assessment with the teacher to find out which class could be taken. The competitive team is looking for highly motivated and passionate dancers who take the initiative to practice and want to improve their technique and performance skills. Competition classes require more commitment than recreational classes and students are responsible for attending classes regularly and acting professionally. The teachers want to ensure that the dancers (and the parents!) are committed to their classes and have excellent work ethic to succeed at competitions.

We want our dancers to excel when they join the competition team. Dancing one hour per week is not enough to push to the next level of skill. For this reason, we require competitive dancers sign up for all of the pre-requisite classes as well as the competitive class. For example, if you register for competitive tap, you must also register for the tap technique class. If you register for competitive jazz or lyrical then you will be required to register for Strength and Turns. Students are required to attend all classes and any extra rehearsals; if a student misses more than three classes then the student may not be able to compete, following the teacher’s discretion. On top of classes, students must commit to 3-4 local dance competitions. The competitions will be in the lower mainland and take place between March and May. Although the events run for 3-6 days, most competitors get away with only attending one day per competition. This all depends on how many competitive routines you are participating in. There is no guarantee that multiple routines for one student will end up being on the same day as each other.

We ask all of our competition students to sign the Competition Contract in order to solidify the commitment that is required from both parents and students. Students who register for competition classes or private lessons intended for comps will be required to sign and abide by the contract for the 2018-2019 season.
